5 new TV series to check out in 2016 (especially if you're a geek)!

Every year there are continuations of the series I'm watching like a new season of Game of Thrones (is John Snow dead or alive?) or Supernatural (still like it, even though it's not as it used to be). But also I'm looking for some new interesting shows to watch - you know, for a change. Or because waiting for the next season of Gotham is soooo boring without anything to fill in the gap.
In 2016 we'll enjoy plenty of geeky movies, but what about the TV series? Worry not - there are new titles to entertain you this year! Let me just make it clear - these shows will not be Lord-of-The-Rings-epic stories. BUT! They're perfect for a little bit of fun after a hard day spent in a cruel, real world. They're good for a blanket and hot cocoa evening or a day in bed.
So, here it comes - my personal, subjective list of 2016 TV series I'm going to give a shot!

1. The X-files

The good, old Mulder & Scully team comes back! I'm pretty excited about that one - I grew up with X-files and can't wait to see the "new" approach to it! I'm very happy they kept David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson playing the main characters - I don't think I'd like to see different actors in X-files.
This show is actually a mini-series, containing 6 episodes. You don't have to know the whole original story to enjoy that show - in the first episode there will be a little recap voiced by David Duchovny - which will be probably appreciated by those unfamiliar with the plot (are there any?).
For people who never ever watched/heard about X-files (short & simplified summary): it's a story revolving around two FBI agents and their investigations on mysterious, unexplicable cases.
Fox Mulder is "the believer", whose obsession is to prove existance of the aliens. It's an important and very personal matter for him, as his sister was abducted and gone since when he was a kid.
Dana Scully - initially placed in X-files department to scientifically explain the cases, as well as rationalize & dismiss any evidence that might prove Mulder's theory. As story unfolds, Dana experiences events that make her question the down to earth approach she showed us in the begining.
There is also a lot of little nuances between main characters and this type of chemistry that makes you wonder "will they kiss finally?"

Premiere: 24 and 25 January 2016 at FOX

2. The Shannara Chronicles

This is the first ever MTV's attempt on high fantasy series (remember when MTV was actually playing music videos? Witty Mind remembers...). It's based on series of books by Terry Brooks (The Sword of Shannara Trilogy). I didn't read the books, so I cannot tell how closely it follows the storyline, but from what I've heard it's rather loose adaptation, so those who expect to see the same story as in the trilogy might be disappointed.
After I saw first few episodes, here's what I think about The Shannara Chronicles. It's aimed at the "younger" audience, so it shouldn't be surprising that there is some of the teenage drama involved ;) It also follows the classic fantasy theme - The Chosen One who will save the world - in this case it's an elvish princess. But do not let it discourage you! It's a very pleasant show if you just want to relax and watch something entertaining. It has pretty decent special effects, amazing sceneries, there is an eye-candy to look at and a pinch of humour! What else a geeky girl could ask for?

Premiere: 5 January 2016 at MTV. (3 of 10 episodes aired so far)

3. Legends of Tomorrow

We all know what to expect when we see DC Comics logo, right? There will be superhero(es), dynamic action, good SFX and a lot of fun involved. Legends of Tomorrow seems to be no different than other DC's productions. Even more - we're going to meet characters we know from other series. There will be Firestorm, Heat Wave and Captain Cold, Hawkgirl and Hawkman - we've met them in "The Flash". We'll also see Atom and White Canary we got introduced to in "Arrow". The story begins when a time-travelling rogue Rip Hunter appears to form a group that will...yes, you guessed right- save the world from a terrible threat, that puts in danger not only whole planet, but also time itself. With such an accumulation of superheroes in one show it could either be a hit, or "meh" - but usually DC doesn't disappoint me, so I'm waiting to see.

Premiere: 21 January 2016 at The CW

4. Shadowhunters

Do you remember the 2013 movie The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones? After reading the books by Cassandra Clare I had quite high expectations. I can't say the movie fulfilled them, but despite what critics says, I liked it - it was a pleasant, entertaining production that wasn't supposed to make you ponder the life and universe. I kinda hoped they will make movies based on other two books of trilogy, but it didn't happen.
Well, now we get TV series based on the same books - hopefully it won't be disappointing! Again it looks like its target audience is rather "young", I would put it on the same shelf as Vampire Diares - which doesn't mean it's not going to be fun to watch!
What we're getting is a girl who finds out she's half-angel hybrid (yep, after vampires and werewolves now it's time for nephilim). Clary (main heroine), on her 18th birthday learns the truth her mother was trying to protect her from. After Clary's mom is being abducted by the "bad guys", she'll join Shadowhunters - the demon hunters organization to save her. She will also discover her inherited, but hidden for years powers.

Premiere: 12 January 2016 at Freeform

5. The Magicians

The Magicians is the new series produced by SyFy. I have to admit, it's the most anticipated one for me and at the same time I'm really concerned if it's possible to transfer the climate of the original books into a TV format. The books, written by Lev Grossman caught me for a long time! They are a mixture of adult version of Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter in a nostalgic, sometimes depressing, sometimes amazing world. The atmosphere of the books was hard to describe, it gave this intriguing, bittersweet impression that left me with an apetite for more! Now I wonder, how they will pass it in the series?
I've seen the pilot - and it looks pretty good! Of course there are changes compared to the books, but it has a lot of potential. I hope they will not mess it up later! The story so far follows more or less the books (except age of characters and few other details), special effects seem nice, music is pretty good and overall it looks promising! I can't wait for the next episode.

Premiere: 25 January 2016 at SyFy (there was a pre-released pilot on 16 December 2015)

So, these are my series to check out in 2016 - I hope at least some of them will be enjoyable for longer than few episodes. And if they are - I hope they won't be cancelled after one season! I hate when they do that.

Are you waiting for some of the series I listed? What are your types for 2016?

    1. Yep, I know - but still, since it's a fresh season after 14 years I consider it "new" :D And for many younger people it will be really the first time they'll see it ;) Few days left until the 1st episode - yay!

  2. It took me a long time to really enjoy the X-Files first time round, it was only with the persistence of my husband that I actually watched it but I am interested to see how these new episodes turn out. I am looking forward to watching Shadowhunters as well considering they are a series of books.

    1. I got into X-files because my dad loved the show and we were watching it together, so it's a sentimental thing for me and I'm curious about the new episodes :) Shadowhunters so far is enjoyable, I just watched 2nd episode yesterday - of course it's simplified compared to books, but still fun to watch.

  6. The ShadowHunters, X-files and The Magicians sound like a ton of fun, Mayhaps I will check them out hopefully when they make their way to UK.

My children love sci-fi and they chose which ones we see, so maybe I should start planting some ideas NLP lolol.

    1. I don't know how old are your kids and I think (judging from the books) The Magicians might have some "adult" content - better check it! :D

  17. I just watched the premiere of Legends of Tomorrow and I like everything I saw so far! I wasn't a fan of Shadowhunters at all. I read the books though, and am a huge fan of those. The show was such a deviation

    1. I still have to watch it. Shadowhunters on the other hand is (as usual) far worse than the books, which I'm a big fan too. I'm giving the series a chance though, it might get better in time - but I'm doing my best to not compare it with books - it's the only way in many cases.

    1. So far (two episodes) of The Magicians I enjoyed greatly - this show has a right climate, that reminds me of the books. Of course the plot and order of events is not exactly as we know from literary original, but it didn't rub me wrong way yet - and that's a plus!
